TARBOSAURUS the Asian Trex 2 Tooth Set
(pronounced TAR-bow-SAWR-us) Tarbosaurus is an invalid name for Tyrannosaurus bataar or T. efremovi. Tarbosaurus is also sometimes called the Asian Trex and is somewhat smaller that its North American cousin. T. bataar was about 30 to 40 feet long and weighed 4 to 5 tons. T. efremovi was about 23 to 26 feet long and weighed 2 to 3 tons. Both adult and juvenile skeletons have been found. It was named by Maleev in 1955.
Between 58 and 64 teeth lined its jaws. This tooth count is slightly more than that of Tyrannosaurus, but fewer than in smaller tyrannosaurids, like Gorgosaurus and Alioramus. Most of its teeth were ovular in cross section, although the teeth of the premaxilla at the tip of the upper jaw had a D-shaped cross section. However, this heterodonty is characteristic of the family. The longest teeth were in the maxilla (upper jawbone), with crowns up to 85 millimeters (3.3 in) long.
The larger tooth is 3.5 inches around the outer curve. The smaller tooth is 3 1/8 inches.
