Odontocephalus egeria, West Virginia Largest Trilobite

This trilobite was found in Hardy County, WV. The original specimen is on display at the Smithsonian near Dinosaur Hall. Trilobites are arthropods. All arthropods possess an exoskeleton, bi-lateral symmetry, jointed appendages, segmented bodies, and specialized appendages. All species of trilobites are extinct with the last ones dying out in the Permian Period 299-252 million years ago. Arthropods include insects, spiders, scorpions, centipedes, and millipedes on land, and crabs, crayfish, shrimp, lobsters, and barnacles in water. Over 85 percent of all known animal species are arthropods. This trilobite was found in Devonian rock 416-360 million years ago.

This specimen is 9.5 inches long, 3.75 wide x 2 inches thick.
