This chunk of authentic fossil T-rex bone was found in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana and is about 65-70 million years old. While most T-rex bones are important to science this small piece was salvaged from a dig site which had been exposed to erosion for many years leaving the bone in tiny shards with no scientific value. Note the porous honeycomb pattern in parts of the bone. This pattern is unique to birds and theropod dinosaurs. Hollow often honeycomb bones are the most common characteristic of birds and theropods. The cortical bone (outer layer) is a dense, low-porosity and less metabolically active tissue. The trabecular bone (inner layer) is a honeycomb-like structure that is metabolically active. This makes T-rex and other theropod bones strong and light wight. The collectors value of T-rex bones cannot be underestimated. A very nearly complete T-rex skeleton sold at auction for 32 million dollars in October 2020.
